Minutes of the December Monthly Meeting of the Shannon Town Council held
in the Shannon Town Hall on Tuesday December 6th 2005 immediately after
the 2006 Budget meeting.
Councillor Tony Mulcahy, Méara Bhaile, presided.
Present were Councillors McCarthy, Lambert, Flynn, McLoughlin, McMahon,
McKee and Hillery.
Apologies from Cllr. Duff.
In attendance : Mr. Gerard Dollard - Town Manager and Tomás
Mac Cormaic - Town Clerk.
1/12/05 Minutes of November Meeting.
Proposed by Cllr. Flynn, seconded by Cllr .Hillery and resolved;
“that the minutes of the November Monthly Meeting of the Shannon
Town Council held in the Shannon Town Hall at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday November
1st 2005, having been circulated, be adopted and signed by the Meara Bhaile.”
2/12/05 Memorandum on Meeting with Supermarket Managers.
Proposed by Cllr. McCarthy, seconded by Cllr. Lambert and resolved;
“that a memorandum of a meeting at 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday November
1st 2005 with representatives of TESCO, DUNNES STORES and LYDL in relation
to abandoned shopping trollies be noted”.
3/12/05 Correspondence.
- A letter from Paddy Halton , 11, Tullyglass Hill relating to the
Neighbour Wood Scheme was read and noted.
- A letter from Rolande E. Hall, 16, Tullyvarraga Hill relating to
the Neighbour Wood Scheme.
- A letter from the A.M.A.I. relating to Town Council representation
on River Basin Development Advisory Councils was read and noted. Shannon
Town Council through the offices of the A.M.A.I. will seek to have members
nominated to the Advisory Council.
- A notice of a resolution adopted by Ballina Town Council concerning
the rateable valuation of Child Care Facilities was noted.
- A notice of a resolution adopted by Comhairle Baile na h-Inse concerning
the purchase of houses in the voluntary housing scheme was noted.
- Support from Comhairle baile Cluain Eois for a resolution adopted
by Shannon Town Council was noted.
- Acknowledgement by Shannon Musical Society of a community grant was
noted.
- A letter from a student of St. Caimins Community School relating
to “Fair Trade” was read and noted. This letter including
attachments would be circulated to all members and the student would
be invited to address the January meeting of the Council on “Fair
Trade”.
- An invitation from the Taxi Regulator for the Town Council to make
representations regarding Taximeter Areas and Taxi Fares was noted.
The members decided that they would not be making representations on
this matter.
4/12/05 Reports from Area Council Meeting.
The Meara Bhaile gave a verbal report on matters of interest to Shannon
Town discussed at the recent Shannon Area Council Meeting. Information
on these is available on the website.
5/12/05 Reports from M.P.C. Chairs.
Cllr. Lambert reported that the Farmers Market will continue to operate
in Drumgeely until Christmas but would not be operating during January
and February. It was intended from the start that the market would close
down for these two months during which a review of the market would take
place concerning the products available and the location.
Cllr. Mc Loughlin reported on progress with the St. Patrick’s Day
Parade. The likely starting point will be Wolfe Tones G.A.A. Club with
the parade going by the Town Centre and finishing at the Town Hall. More
definite information about the starting and finishing points of the parade
will be available at the January 2006 meeting.
An information meeting on the Neighbour Wood Scheme will be held in the
Oakwood Arms Hotel in the New Year to get the community involved in considerations
of litter, safety, anti social behaviour and ongoing maintenance.
6/12/05 Shrubbery in front of Nos. 21 to 26 Cluain Airne.
Proposed by Cllr. McCarthy, seconded by Cllr. McMahon and resolved;
“that the shrubbery on the green in front of no’s 21 -
26 Cluain Airne be removed.”
7/12/05 Parking of Large Commercial Vehicles in Residential Areas.
Proposed by Cllr. McCarthy, seconded by Cllr. McLoughlin and resolved;
“that the practice of parking large commercial vehicles in housing
estates be prevented.”
8/12/05 Traffic Problems at Town Centre.
Proposed by Cllr. Hillery, seconded by Cllr. Flynn and resolved;
“that Clare County Council would correct the dangerous traffic movements
at (a) Traffic Lights at the Junction of Bothar Mor and Beallach Bri and
(b) the new entrance / exit to Skycourt Shopping Centre on Bothar Mor
and that the inclusion of U turn facilities and corrective road design
be implemented A.S.A.P.”
9/12/05 Drumgeely Hill
Proposed by Cllr. Flynn, seconded by Cllr. McMahon and resolved;
“that Shannon Town Council draw up a plan to re-generate the Drumgeely
Hill area in partnership with Clare County Council and the residents of
the area in view of the state of dereliction that exists in the area.”
10/12/05 T Junction of Bothar na Luachra and Smithstown Road.
Proposed by Cllr. McKee, seconded by Cllr. McMahon and resolved;
“that Clare County Council be asked to make safe the junction at
the end of Aidan Park and Smithstown Road.”
11/12/05 Respond Community Housing.
Proposed by Cllr. Flynn, seconded by Cllr. McCarthy and resolved;
“that Shannon Town Council request Respond Community Housing to
address the elected members to brief them on their recent proposals for
Shannon.”
12/12/05 Irish Ferries.
Proposed by Cllr. McKee, seconded by Cllr. McMahon and resolved;
“that Shannon Town Council show solidarity with the Irish Ferries
employees and express our concerns at recent trends with the labour market.”
