Minutes of the June Monthly Meeting of the Shannon Town Council held in the Shannon Town Hall on Tuesday June 2nd 2009 at 6.30 p.m.
Councillor Gerry Flynn, Meara Bhaile, presided.
Present were Councillors, Duff, McCarthy, Lambert, Hillery, Mulcahy, McKee McLoughlin and McMahon.
In attendance Mr. Gerard Dollard – Town Manager and Tomás Mac Cormaic - Town Clerk.
Adjournment
Proposed by Cllr. Flynn, seconded by Cllr. Lambert and resolved; “that in sympathy with Cllr. Patricia McCarthy on the recent death of her father, Mr. John O’Connell, the meeting be adjourned for fifteen minutes.”
The meeting reconvened at 6.45 p.m.
May Minutes
Proposed by Cllr. McKee, seconded by Cllr. McLoughlin and resolved; “that the minutes of the May monthly meeting of the Shannon Town Council held in the Shannon Town Hall at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday May 5th 2009, having been circulated, be adopted and signed by the Meara Bhaile.”
Correspondence
- A letter from Garda Paul Clancy outlining plans undertaken under the Community Policing Initiative which would involve children aged 8 years old to 14 years old in street league football with the aim of keeping these young people physically occupied and also to get the children to interact with the Gardai was read and noted. Garda Clancy sought some financial support from the Town Council for this initiative. It was proposed by Cllr. Mulcahy, seconded by Cllr McCarthy and fully supported by the council “that an amount of €300.00 be allocated to this initiative.”
- A communication congratulating the Shannon Junior Chess Club on their success in the recent Community Games National Finals where they won two silver medals, one in under 12 age group and the other in the under 16 age group was noted and the young chess players were complemented.
- A letter from Mary Harney, T.D. Minister for Health & Children in relation to the provision of adequate facilities for suffers from Cystic Fibrosis.
- A copy of an email to the Town Manager from Shannon Town Unites AFC concerning the building of Club Dressing Rooms on the site of Park Hall was read . The members would be satisfied to discuss this proposal with the Soccer Club provided local residents were also included in the discussions.
Report from May Area Council Meeting
The Meara Bhaile reported that the Arts Centre was again discussed as was traffic calming and the clearing and security of a laneway in Tullyglass Crescent,
Municipal Policy Committee Reports
Cllr. McMahon had nothing to report. Cllr. Duff reported on the financial status of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. The account has a current credit of €1,957.86.
Review of Activities during the life of the Council
A very comprehensive report on the activities of the Council had been prepared by the Manager and circulated to each member. The manager was complemented on the detail of report.
Motions From Members
Cllr. McCarthy withdrew a notice of motion she had submitted in relation to An Post Deliveries.
A Notice of Motion submitted by Cllr. Mc Mahon had already been adopted in June 2007 whereby an amount of €700 provided in the budget for a “Mayor’s Award” during his term as Meara Bhaile be allocated to a Shannon Literary and Culture Project. The Town Clerk confirmed that this €700 is available when and if such a project is properly defined and is recognised as a community association.
Closing the meeting all members complemented each other on their achievements over the past five years and wished those retiring good health and happiness and wished those seeking re-election success. Kind words were also expressed to the Town Manager who was attending his last meeting as Shannon Town Manager before taking up duty as Ennis Town. All agreed that Ennis’s gain would be Shannon’s loss but all wished him well in his future career. |
