Minutes of the June Monthly Meeting of the Shannon Town Council held in
the St Tola's N.S.on Tuesday June 1st 2004 at 6.30 p.m.
Councillor Seán Hillery, Méara Bhaile, presided.
Present were Councillors McCarthy, Lambert, Flynn, O'Brien, McKee
and Duff.
In attendance : Mr. Ger Dollard - Town Manager, and Tomás Mac Cormaic
- Town Clerk.
Opening the meeting the Méara Bhaile, the members, the manager
and the town clerk offered their condolences to Cllr. Gerry Flynn on the
recent death of his brother John in Sixmilebridge and as a mark of respect
the Council meeting was adjourned to be reconvened at 6.45 p.m.
1/6/04 Minutes of Meeting with An Post.
Proposed by Cllr. Flynn, seconded by Cllr. O'Brien and resolved;
"that the minutes of a special meeting of the members of the Shannon
Town Council with Mr. Adrian Gordon - Customer Services Manager
with An Post held in the Shannon Town Hall at 6.00 p.m. on Tuesday May
4th 2004, having been circulated, be adopted and signed by the Méara
Bhaile."
2/6/04 Minutes of May Monthly Meeting.
Proposed by Cllr. McCarthy, seconded by Cllr. Flynn and resolved;
"that the minutes of the May monthly meeting of the Shannon Town
Council held in the Shannon Town Hall at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday May 4th
2004, having been circulated, be adopted and signed by the Méara
Bhaile"
3/6/04 Activities of the Commission/Council 1999 to 2004.
A report by the Manager highlighting the activities / achievements of
the Shannon Council over the period July 1999 to June 2004 had been circulated
to the members. The members were unanimous in complementing the Manager
for his initiative.
4/6/04 Correspondence.
- Confirmation from the European Commission on the receipt of a submission
on the TACIS initiative was noted.
- A letter from the Manager of the Bank of Ireland relating to ATMs
in Shannon was read and noted. A copy of this letter to be circulated
to members.
- An invitation from the Environment Awareness Officer of Clare County
Council to have Shannon nominated under category 3 (towns with population
between 2,000 and 12,000) for participation in the Co-operation Ireland
Pride in Place Awards was noted. The Town Clerk informed the members
that as the closing date for the submission of an application for participation
in this programme did not give time to consult with the members, he
had completed and submitted an application on behalf of the Council.
It was proposed by Cllr. McCarthy, seconded by the Méara Bhaile
and resolved;
" that Shannon Town Council in co-operation with other groups
participate in this Pride In Place venture."
- Details of Income and Expenditure in relation to the 2004 Mayor's
Ball were noted. A sum of €3,500 has been presented to Clare Haven
Services by the Méara Bhaile.
- The Méara Bhaile's annual award has been donated to Shannon
Senior Citizens' Club to assist them in purchasing cooking equipment
for their twice weekly meals on wheels scheme.
5/6/04 Official Name of New Play Area.
The Town Clerk informed the members that he received a number of suggestions
for the naming of the new play area, all in Irish. He suggested that the
most appropriate of these might be TÍR NA nÓg.
It was proposed by Cllr. McCarthy, seconded by Cllr. Duff and resolved;
"that the official name of the new Shannon Play Area be TIR NA nÓg
and that a sign to this effect be erected in the play area with the following
two lines of poetry on the sign 'Tá Tir na nÓg ar
chúl an ti, Tir Áluinn trina chéile'".
6/6/04 One Stop Shop.
Work is continuing in the Town Hall to provide limited One Stop Shop
facilities. This work is expected to be completed before the end of June.
7/6/04 Reports from Chairpersons of MPCs.
Cllr. Mc Kee commented on the acceptance by the European Commission of
the TACIS proposal.
Cllr. Lambert presented a financial statement from the St. Patrick's
Day Parade which showed an opening balance of €393.18, receipts of
a grant of €2,000 from the Town Council, expenditure of €1,967.44
leaving a balance of €425.74 with one invoice for sound equipment
yet to come.
Cllr. Lambert also commented on the New Play Area which had been officially
opened earlier this afternoon. She considered that some supervision of
those using the play area is necessary in order to ensure the safety of
smaller children. She suggested that members of the community could be
encouraged to become involved in monitoring this play area.
8/6/04 Smithstown Industrial Estate.
Proposed by Cllr. Lambert, seconded by Cllr. O'Brien and resolved;
"that Shannon Development Co. address the serious condition of the
roads in Smithstown Industrial Estate and carry out the necessary upgrading
immediately."
Closing the meeting, the Méara Bhaile wished success to all the
outgoing members in the forthcoming election of members to the Shannon
Town Council and hoped that the same group would be back representing
the interest of the Shannon Community at the next meeting, which would
be the first meeting of the new council.
