Elections

Local Elections 1982

Elections for the first Town Commissioners were held on March 11th 1982. There were twenty six candidates for the nine positions on the Commission and after twenty one counts the Returning Officer, Roibeard O'Ceallaigh then Clare County Secretary declared the following nine people elected.

  • 1st Patricia McCarthy (Labour)
  • 2nd Michael Murtagh (F.F.)
  • 3rd Sean O'Driscoll (F.F.)
  • 4th Brigid Makowski (I.R.S.P.)
  • 5th Kathleen Ryan (F.F.)
  • 6th Eddie O'Brien (Ind.)
  • 7th Pat O'Brien (F.F.)
  • 8th Brendan Regan (F.F.)
  • 9th John Gunn (F.G.).

The first meeting of the Town Commissioners was held on March 15th 1982 in the Community Hall in Kincora Apartments where Brendan Regan was elected the first Chairman of the Shannon Town Commissioners. The offices of the Commission and the meeting room were in 14B, Fergus Drive and were rented from Shannon Development Co. Blaise Treacy the Assistant County Manager was the first manager of the Shannon Town Commission.

Local Elections 1985

The 1985 Local Elections were held on June 20th 1985. There were fifteen candidates for the nine places on the Shannon Town Commission. After eleven counts the following were declared elected:

  • 1st Patricia McCarthy (Ind.)
  • 2nd Sean Driscoll (F.F.)
  • 3rd Kathleen Ryan (F.F.)
  • 4th Mike McKee (S.F.)
  • 5th Pat O'Brien (F.F.)
  • 6th Brigid Makowski (Ind.)
  • 7th Dermot Hammond (F.G.)
  • 8th Tom O'Shaughnessy (Labour)
  • 9th Geraldine Lambert (F.F.)

Local Elections 1994

The 1994 Local Elections were held on June 9th 1994 for which there were nineteen candidates for the nine positions on the Shannon Town Commission. After sixteen counts the following were elected:

  • 1st Patricia McCarthy (Ind.)
  • 2nd Brigid Makowski (Ind.)
  • 3rd Tony Mulcahy (F.G)
  • 4th Geraldine Lambert (F.F.)
  • 5th Sean Hillery (F.F.)
  • 6th Tom O'Shaughnessy (Labour)
  • 7th Mike McKee (S.F.)
  • 8th Marcella Murphy (F.G.)
  • 9th Peter Flannagan (Ind.)

Local Elections 1999

The 1999 Local Elections were held on June 11th 1999 and sixteen candidates competed for the nine positions on the Commission. After twelve counts the following were elected:
  • 1st Patricia McCarthy (Ind.)
  • 2nd Sean Hillery (F.F.)
  • 3rd. Tony Mulcahy (F.G.)
  • 4th Gerry Flynn (F.G.)
  • 5th Mike McKee (S.F.)
  • 6th Geraldine Lambert (F.F.)
  • 7th Greg Duff (Labour)
  • 8th Tony McMahon (Labour)
  • 9th Pat O' Brien (F.F.)

Méara Bhaile

On January 1st 2002 in accordance with Local Government Act 2001 Town Commissioners were discontinued and replaced by Town Councillors. At the March monthly meeting of the Shannon Town Council it was decided by resolution to replace the title of Cathaoirleach with that of Méara Bhaile.

Local Elections 2004

The 2004 Local Elections were held on June 11th 2004 and fifteen candidates competed for the nine positions on the Commission. After ten counts the following were elected:
  • 1st Tony Mulcahy (F.G.)
  • 2nd Patricia McCarthy (Ind.)
  • 3rd Gerry Flynn (Ind.)
  • 4th Sean Hillery (F.F.)
  • 5th Sean McLoughlin (F.G.)
  • 6th Geraldine Lambert (F.F.)
  • 7th Greg Duff (Labour)
  • 8th Tony McMahon (Labour)
  • 9th Mike McKee (Ind.)

Local Elections 2009

The 2009 Local Elections were held on June 5th 2009 and thirteen candidates competed for the nine positions on the council. After ten counts the following were elected:

  • 1st Tony Mulcahy (F.G.)
  • 2nd Patricia McCarthy (Ind.)
  • 3rd Gerry Flynn (Ind.)
  • 4th Tony Mc Mahon (Labour)
  • 5th Mary Brennan (F.G.)
  • 6th Greg Duff (Labour)
  • 7th Cathy McCafferty (Sinn Fein)
  • 8th Sean McLoughlin (FG)
  • 9th Michael Fleming (FG)
