Recycle for Sight campaign

An international campaign to redistribute eye glasses to needy people in developing countries is appealing to local people to donate spectacles that are no longer in use.

Shannon and District Lions Club has adopted the Recycle for Sight campaign and has already collected hundreds of used pairs of glasses which will be sent to one of many Lions Clubs eyeglass recycling centres. The spectacles will be cleaned, sorted, packaged and distributed to children and adults in many developing countries.

Lions Club president Tony McMahon has complimented project co-ordinator Paddy Powell and club members on collecting the used eyeglasses. According to Tony people have thousands of pairs of unused glasses lying in drawers and cupboards that could enable a child to read or an adult to take up employment, or many other life enhancing activities if only they had a pair of glasses.

Shannon and District Lions Club will shortly be identifying collection points where used spectacles can be donated. Any type of eyeglasses, prescription or other including sunglasses can be recycled.

Tony McMahon is asking people to have a quick search around homes and offices for glasses they no longer use, and donate them to the Lions Club appeal. “Your efforts could restore the gift of sight to someone,” said Tony. For information on Lions Club call Tony 086 2359277.or contact any member of the club.

With the Lions Club experiencing ever increasing demands for their service, new members are always welcome. Shannon and District Lions Club are organising a 10k run in the near future. Details will be available shortly.

The minimum role involves interacting with young people in a café style setting, serving tea/coffee and sandwiches and supervising members over a two-hour period. Training will be provided and the local youth work team will support all volunteers.

Shannon Music Project is on the hunt for local adult volunteers who have a keen interest in music and would like to get involved to support and encourage a committee of young people to organise music events, workshops and performances for young people aged 15-25 in Shannon. The project is particularly interested in recruiting volunteers who have specific talents in drums, song writing, sound engineering or guitar.
