Local Elections 2009The 2009 Local Elections were held on June 11th 2009 and fifteen candidates competed for the nine positions on the Commission. After ten counts the following were elected:
IBAL ranks Shannon Town favourably in recent litter surveyThe recent IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter) report was very favourable from a Shannon point of view. Out of sixty towns surveyed Shannon came thirteenth despite three areas being singled out as "moderately littered". These were the Skycourt Shopping Centre, The Bottle Banks near Tir na nOg and Tradaree Court. Allotments are welcomed by Shannon GardenersShannon gardeners were allocated their new Allotments in the vicinity of Illaunmanagh Cemetery on Monday evening last at 4:30 p.m. There are 37 allotments each about 150 square meters in size and the cost per annum is €40 per plot. Plots will have to be vacated each February and reassigned again in March. The plots were blessed by Fr. Tom Ryan at 5:00 p.m. and this was followed by light refreshments on the Oakwood Arms Hotel at 5:30 p.m Shannon Town Twinning Association accept invite to visit GuingampShannon Town Twinning Association have accepted an invitation from their twin town Guingamp to visit Guingamp next August during the Guingamp Annual St. Loup Musical Festival which takes place from August 8th to 16th. This Annual Musical Festival attracts traditional musicians from all over Europe and had over the years hosted groups hosted groups such as the Wolfe Tones, The Dubliners, Shaskeen, the Mac Cormaic Group and many famous Irish Traditional Groups. Members of the Twinning Association and anybody who would like to be part of the group visiting Guingamp next August are invited to contact the Town Clerk at 478081 who will be arranging various travelling options. Volunteering opportunities for adults with Shannon Youth ServiceHave you time on your hands? Do you like getting out of the house in the evenings and are you looking for a challenge? Have you thought about volunteering in your local community and don't know who to talk to? Well if you are aged 21 or over and interested in working as a volunteer with young people aged 13-25 then Shannon Youth Office has several projects that are seeking adult volunteers right now! It's very simple right now Shannon Youth Office has four main projects that are looking to recruit adult volunteers to help plan and run activities for young people in the Rineanna and Drumgeely areas of Shannon. Skyview Youth Club based in Rineanna View is looking for volunteers over 21 to help plan and run youth club activities from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. every Thursday night during school term. One additional hour long planning meeting a month will also be required. The club provides planned activities and development opportunities supported by the local youth worker for secondary school students aged 13-16. The Kick Back Café based in Rineanna View is seeking adult volunteers aged 21 or over to support a group of young people aged 16-21 to plan events and supervise the youth café at the weekends. The KBC is open to all young people aged 16-21 in Shannon on Friday and Saturdays from 5-10pm and 4-9pm respectively. The minimum role involves interacting with young people in a café style setting, serving tea/coffee and sandwiches and supervising members over a two-hour period. Training will be provided and the local youth work team will support all volunteers. Shannon Music Project is on the hunt for local adult volunteers who have a keen interest in music and would like to get involved to support and encourage a committee of young people to organise music events, workshops and performances for young people aged 15-25 in Shannon. The project is particularly interested in recruiting volunteers who have specific talents in drums, song writing, sound engineering or guitar. Anyone interested in this project can find out more on Shannon Music Project. Drumgeely Youth Club based in St Senan's school is looking for volunteers' aged 21 or over to help plan and run youth club activities from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. every Monday night during school term. One additional hour long planning meeting a month will also be required. The club is run for secondary school students from the area. 'Liosta na Laochra' - Shannon Town Council to honour members of the communityIt is customary at this annual function to also recognise achievements of members of our community under the heading "Liosta na Laochra". To date the following seven people have been nominated for recognition :-
Under Elaine's Guidance the Shannon Gymnastics Club have competed in International Competitions in Greece where they won four gold, one silver and one bronze medals. They are now invited to compete in further international competitions in Bulgaria next March. Minister Gormerly grants extension to Shannon Town BoundaryShannon Town Council has been informed by the Department of the Environment that Minister John Gormerly has signed the Statutory Instrument extending the boundaries of Shannon Town in accordance with the application for extension applied for by the Town Council. This will mean a very significant increase in the number of people entitled to vote in next June's Local Election for Shannon Town Council. A copy of the Statutory Instrument will be provided to the Town Council in the very near future. The new boundary will include all of Ballycasey and an extension of the boundary at Ballymurtasgh which will bring the Traveller Halting Site within the Town Boundary. The Town Boundary is totally separate from the Parish Boundary and this new extension to the Town will not cause any changes to the Parish Boundary.
