Clare Youth Exchange plans for 2009
This summer 20 young people will come together in Corofin Youth Hostel to work on a youth exchange between Clare Youth Service and its partner, the Omagh Youth Centre in Co. Tyrone.
Last year 10 members of Skyview Youth Club in Shannon visited Omagh Youth Centre and stayed in the Ulster Folk Park for 5 days and got to know 10 young people from the towns of Omagh and Fintona. The group had a marvellous experience and made many good friends.
This year it is the turn of the Shannon group to host the return leg of the Causeway British-Irish Youth Exchange program and this will take place from June 28th to July 3rd.
Ten young people from Shannon and ten from Omagh will once again meet to work together on the themes of Drug and Alcohol Misuse and Youth Health issues over the course of the 5 day exchange.
The exchange is funded by Leargas the Exchange Bureau and fundraising by both groups in their local communities. An advanced planning visit took place recently when Youth Worker Julie Donnaghy from Omagh Youth Centre met with Shannon Youth Worker Cathal Dillon and Trish Flynn of Clare Youth Service to finalise accommodation details and meet with those who will be facilitating workshops during the exchange.
"The exchange is looking really good from what Cathal and Trish have shown me and from the preparation that has gone into organising the five days of events. I think that it will be a wonderful experience for both groups." commented Julie.
Cathal feels that youth exchanges are a great way for young people to see other places and make friends all over the world,
"Taking part in a youth exchange is something every young person should be given the opportunity to do. They give young people the chance to experience different cultures and meet people from all walks of life, its something that will stay with a person forever and can leave people with wonderful friends for life".
