Excerpts from Cathaoirleach, Clare County Council, Cllr Tom McNamaras speech at the opening of the Shannon Festival
Minister, ladies and gentlemen and invited guests, as Mayor of Clare I want to thank you the organisers of this festival for inviting me to Join with you here in Shannon this evening for its official opening. I also want to acknowledge your foresight and strong sense of community spirit in putting together such a comprehensive programme of events over the next two days.
I have always found that community gatherings such as this are a great measure of the level of activity happening in any local parish, village or town. Events like these demonstrate a pride of place amongst everyone living in the community which is why Clare County Council is delighted to have been able to make a financial contribution to this particular festival.
The wide ranging events taking place this weekend also showcase the creative, civic and community potential that exists in this town, and this l am confident will be further enhanced when The Shannon Venue is eventually delivered.
As County Clare’s second largest town, it is appropriate that it be served by a multi-functional centre that will act as a focal point for its residents, its employees, its industry and its visitors.
Just like this wonderful festival, the Shannon Venue will provide a renewed sense of place, purpose and community for the people of Shannon.
On behalf of my colleagues on Clare County Council, and in particular the Shannon Municipal District councillors, I would like to express my support for the development of the Shannon Venue. With that I wish all of you a very enjoyable festival.
